Eye 80 – celebrating two decades of graphic design and change
Of the design events I have attended in recent times, half of them claimed to be about the future, while the other half dealt with the past. Yet talk to a designer, or an editor, and they are nearly always focused on the immediate present.
The pace of a quarterly printed magazine gives us scope to step back and look at graphic design, one issue, or theme, at a time, but putting together this 80th issue reminded us of the big changes that have rocked the world during twenty-odd years of Eye. Yet despite some extraordinary upheavals, many aspects of life, work and people remain the same.
Design history retains its force as inspiration – or acquires new meaning – while the application and subversion of new technologies, from webfonts to games hardware, sets new, imaginative challenges for the decades to come.
