Here are a few things – magazines, postcards, projects and events – that caught our attention in recent weeks.
The makers of children’s magazine Anorak, editor Cathy Olmedillas and illustrator / designer Anna Dunn, have launched a little sister publication called Dot for under fives. It is infused with colourful spreads about travel, reading, eating, laughing, making, international greetings and song lyrics as well as comics, facts about colour and games such as Snakes and Ladders (above).

Graphic design studio We Made This sent us two packs – ‘Greetings’ and ‘Thanks’ – of sumptuously printed, limited edition postcards that say things like ‘Hello world’, ‘Hola’, ‘ta very much’, ‘You star!’ and ‘Much obliged’. Shall we keep them or send them out to friends of Eye? (For a different approach to postcards see ‘Exquisite discourse’ on the Eye blog.

Quarterly illustration report Varoom recently launched their ‘Play’ issue which includes gaming writer John Sharp’s article ‘The Art Game’, an article on Chinese illustrator Jiiakuann and Rick Poynor’s feature ‘Playing With Space: The Image Theatre of Russell Mills’, among others. (To read more about Russell Mills, see ‘Russell Mills: Material and metaphor’ in Eye 5.)

Typographer Craig Ward and biochemist and experimental photographer Linden Gledhill have launched a Kickstarter for their FE2O3 Glyphs project which will result in a generative ornamental type system and a series of letterpress prints printed with a magnetic ink called Ferrofluid (developed by NASA in the 1960s) and Pantone black. Backers will receive a working .otf typeface and a unique letterpress print (depending on pledge amount).

There’s plenty going on this weekend in the design world: illustration and graphic design studio Nous Vous are having a summer sale of drawings, zines and other printed matter in their online store; the independent magazine festival Indiecon 2015 runs from 28-30 August in Hamburg, Germany, with conference speakers such as Johannes Conrad (Flaneur), Anke Eberhardt (Cut) and Steven Gregor (Gym Class).
You can now see Margaret Calvert’s recent D&AD President’s Lecture, which can be viewed online here. And don’t forget that ‘Web 1.0’, our next Type Tuesday, takes place at St Bride on 1 September 2015, the day after the Bank Holiday.
