Fontstand 2022
‘Fontstand International Typography Conference’
9-10 September 2022, Den Haag, the Netherlands
It was a Dutch train strike, rather than Covid-19, that threatened to disrupt Fontstand’s in-real-life event on 10 September 2022. An opportunity for Fontstand’s partners to meet and talk in public about their work, a young audience of type designers, type users and students gathered at the Sound and Vision museum in The Hague. Peter Bil’ak kept the tone warm and democratic. There was history: Erik van Blokland began the day talking about the legacy of Gerrit Noordzij, but if the event had a thread, it was developments in multiple writing systems and font technology. A highlight was Sarang Kulkarni and Noopur Datye from Mumbai’s Ek Type explaining the complications of designing type in a region with seventeen different script systems.
