This photograph of a deliriously colourful 1969 swimming pool designed by Verner Panton for the headquarters of Spiegel Publishing in Hamburg is one of approximately 200 works featured in ‘Pop Art Design’ exhibition at London’s Barbican Gallery, (22 October 2013–9 February 2014).
Claimed to be the first major exhibition to explore the links between art and design, ‘Pop Art Design’ features work by more than 70 artists and designers, including Peter Blake, Pauline Boty, Robert Brownjohn, Patrick Caulfield, Judy Chicago, Michael English, Richard Hamilton, Robert Indiana, Allen Jones, R. B. Kitaj, William Klein, Eduardo Paolozzi (see Critique, pp.8-9), Ed Ruscha, Saul Steinberg, Joe Tilson, Andy Warhol, Stephen Willats and Tom Wesselmann.
